Tomorrow on BANDCAMP FRIDAY, Dibson T Hoffweiler & Yoko OK will be releasing their second record, HOUSE OF HIDDEN LIFE EP! Four songs recorded during the 2020/21 lockdown from their separate homes and mixed in 2022 by Dana Jae. It will be available first on Bandcamp, link in @yoko_okay’s bio! Tonight they play a set in support of their friends Charming Disaster at the Back Room in Berkeley. They play shortly after 8pm. Tickets in @yoko_okay’s bio as well, or you can just pay at the door! Lake Atitlán has had about 50 year cycles of rising and lowering water. Since 1949 or so, the water level has only risen. This little tienda in Santiago Atitlán is one of the casualties of this unusual cycle.
Another representation of San Simón, this one in Santiago Atitlán. Something I live about visiting this figures is the combination of the sacred and the mundane. Out of frame, a Mayan shaman is performing a ritual ceremony to ask San Simón for a successful business venture. The sacredness of the event is palpable, and at the same time the caretakers of San Simón and the shaman can be seen smoking cigarettes, drinking Coca-Cola, warning Gringos who are literally about to burn their asses on ceremonial candles, and making change for visitors. My uptight Christian upbringing makes me want to force everyone to be pious in such situations, so I really appreciate how ceremony here can feel powerful and not be so rigid that it’s inaccessible.
